On Monday night, the USC baseball team defeated Texas A&M 7-1 in the decisive game of the College Station Regional. With the victory, the Trojans advanced to the super regionals for the first time since 2005.
Following the game, the all-tournament team for the regional was announced. As the regional champion, USC naturally dominated the list, with seven of the 12 players on the team being Trojans.
Making the all-tournament team from USC were catcher Isaac Cadena, second baseman Abbrie Covarrubius, third baseman Kevin Takeuchi, outfielder Walter Urbon, outfielder Andrew Lamb, designated hitter Augie Lopez, and pitcher Andrew Johnson. Lopez, who hit a massive three-run home run in Monday night’s finale, was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the Regional.
Many of the above players struggled in USC’s biggest games of the regular season, during which the Trojans went 1-10 against ranked opponents. When the stage was the biggest in the tournament, however, they stepped up in a massive way.
As a result, USC is headed to its first super regional in 21 years. The Trojans will visit North Carolina in the Chapel Hill Super Regional, which is set to begin on Friday.
