San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch couldn’t hold back his smile when the Los Angeles Rams drafted Ty Simpson, but he’s probably not smiling now. His left tackle, Trent Williams, certainly isn’t after learning that the Rams acquired Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns.
Williams spoke with reporters on Wednesday and was asked about the Rams’ big new addition. He’s not afraid to admit “it sucks.”
“Same as everybody,” Williams said. “Everybody that’s not in Rams country. Yeah, I mean, it sucks.”
Williams, 37, indicated that he could retire after the 2027 season, so he might only have to face Garrett twice a year for two more years. Even that will be a challenge, though, especially with Garrett still ascending in Williams’ mind.
“The scary part is he’s still a young player, so he’s still going to get better,” Williams added. “I know it’s scary after seeing what he did last year. I’m never expecting to run into the same player. I know that we see him Week 1 in Australia. He probably will be a little bit better than he was the last time I seen him. Just got to buckle up. It’s going to be tough. I ain’t the only one that’s gotta block him. There’s 31 other teams that got the same news, so it is what it is.”
Garrett moves around a little bit on the defensive line but he primarily rushes off the right side against opposing left tackles. That puts him in Williams’ territory.
There’s no doubt Williams will get help with chips and double teams against Garrett but there won’t be anything easy about trying to block the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and Williams knows it.
