49ers backup QB may start in Week 2 at New Orleans

The injury bug bit the San Francisco 49ers at their most important position.

Quarterback Brock Purdy sustained shoulder and toe injuries in the 49ers’ come-from-behind win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 according to head coach Kyle Shanahan who spoke to reporters on a conference call Monday. Shanahan said Purdy may not practice leading up to the team’s Week 2 showdown with the New Orleans Saints, and his availability for Week 2 is up in the air.

If Purdy can’t play, Mac Jones would be the team’s starting QB with practice squad signal caller Adrian Martinez likely up as the backup.

Jones signed a two-year deal with San Francisco this offseason. He played 27 preseason snaps and completed 73.9 percent of his 23 throws for 209 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. In 52 games and 49 starts since joining the NFL as the No. 15 overall pick in the 2021 draft by the New England Patriots, Jones is 20-29 overall. He has a 65.9 percent completion rate with 54 touchdowns and 44 interceptions.

It’s unclear whether the toe injury could be a longer-term problem for Purdy. It’s also unclear when he suffered the injury. Purdy finished the game 26-of-35 for 277 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The team is off Monday and Tuesday, then they’ll be back on the practice field Wednesday.

The 49ers and Saints will kick off at 10:00am Pacific Time from the Superdome in New Orleans.
