Stevie Wonder 'expected to attend' birthday celebration in Detroit

Stevie Wonder, who turns 76 on Wednesday, is expected to spend his birthday in Detroit, according to organizers throwing a party in honor of the Saginaw native and Motown legend.

“The Love Gala,” a black-tie event in honor of Stevie Wonder, will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the AC Hotel Detroit at the Bonstelle. The evening will feature live entertainment and a tribute to Wonder’s legacy, as well as dinner, dancing, and an official proclamation of May 13 as “Stevie Wonder Day.”

As for Wonder’s attendance, “he is aware of the celebration and yes he is expected to attend the event,” says organizer Sharon DuMas, who is also Wonder’s cousin.

Reps for Wonder did not respond to requests for comment or confirmation.

The event will also commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the dedication of Stevie Wonder Avenue in Detroit. The stretch of road, on Milwaukee Street at Woodward Avenue, was christened during a ceremony in December 2016.

Tickets for the Wonder gala are $71.21 for general admission. Upgrades ($108.55 includes hors d’oeuvres, $161.90 includes a seated dinner) are also available, and VIP tables with eight tickets are $1,400. Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit Wonder Peace Ambassadors, a crime prevention initiative that aims to foster positive relationships among youth.

A community “Love Walk” will precede the event at noon on Wednesday, starting on Stevie Wonder Ave. from Cass to Woodward. Participants can register at urbansolutionstad.org.
