Southwest Detroit apartment fire displaces 24 families, injures 4

All scheduled programming at the Patton Recreation Center is cancelled after a fire on Monday, June 8, displaced residents in the area and resulted in four injuries, according to Detroit’s Parks and Recreation division.

Of the four adult men injured, one suffered a leg injury jumping from a third-story window and was transported to Henry Ford Hospital, and another person suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital.

Officials say the other two men refused transport.

Approximately 24 families are being are being relocated from the complex located at 4130 Cicotte.

The Patton Rec Center is hosting 15 families while the others plan to stay with family, according to Public Information Manager at City of Detroit Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management, Christopher Kopicko.

Officials say before anyone can be relocated back into the apartment complex, fire officials will inspect the building and give approval when it is safe to move back in.

There is no estimated timeframe on when residents will be able to move back in, as of Monday.

The Detroit Fire Department says firefighters received reports of an apartment fire on the city’s southwest side at approximately 7:41 a.m. on Monday.

Upon arrival, DFD officials found smoke, flames and people trapped at several windows.

The city’s fire investigation division is currently on the scene investigating the cause.

It is not yet clear when the center will return to scheduled programing.
