Detroit mom convicted in 8-year-old son's fatal beating sentenced

A Detroit mother convicted of beating her 8-year-old son to death in 2024 has been sentenced, according to court records.

Kentoria Latricia Moss was given 18 months to 10 years in prison by a Wayne County Circuit Court judge on Friday, records said.

The 33-year-old’s attorney, David Cripps, said Monday he thought she did an excellent job of showing the court how remorseful she is and taking responsibility for her actions.

“It’s a very tragic family situation,” Cripps said. “She was not the primary person who caused the death. However, because of her limited involvement, we worked out a compromise that I think satisfies everyone.”

The lawyer also said Moss is one of the more likeable clients he’s represented in quite a while.

“She didn’t hesitate in taking responsibility,” Cripps said. “She is a wonderful person, and I’m sure when she gets beyond her sentence, she’ll be a good, contributing citizen in our community.”

In April, Moss pleaded guilty to second-degree child abuse, according to court records. The crime is punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison.

In exchange for her plea, prosecutors dismissed charges of second-degree murder and lying to police in a violent crime investigation. Second-degree murder is punishable by up to life in prison, and lying to police in a violent crime investigation carries a penalty of up to four years in prison.

Authorities alleged Moss and Jamarr Hill, 38, also of Detroit, beat their son, Adren, to death.

First responders were called to a home in the 600 block of Clairmont Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2024.

Medics arrived and took a boy to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Prosecutors said the Wayne County Medical Examiner determined the child’s cause of death was “multiple blunt force trauma to the head.”

Both were arraigned on charges in connection with the boy’s death.

Hill was charged with murder and first-degree child abuse. He was sentenced in August 2025 to 18 years to 40 years in prison, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

“The alleged facts in this case are chilling,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement at the time Hill was sentenced. “The defendants in this case worked in tandem to beat and eventually kill this poor child — two adults against an eight-year-old. Little Adren had zero chance of surviving.”

The Moss sentencing is among the most recent cases tied to Michigan involving child abuse.

Last month, a Roseville mother who allegedly struck her child in a video shared on social media was charged with abuse.

A former Michigan couple who police say abused their adopted children, including restraining them in a straitjacket and dog cage, pleaded no contest to charges last month.

A Pontiac woman convicted of child abuse and who allegedly left her children alone in squalor in an apartment was sentenced in April to 129 months and 20 years in prison.
