Hot, stormy weather is in the forecast for Lansing this week, with temperature highs on Wednesday and Thursday, June 10-11, surpassing 90 degrees.
Thunderstorms are expected to develop on and off from Monday night, June 8, through Thursday, June 11, with the strongest potential for severe conditions on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Storm Prediction Center by the National Weather Service.
In Lansing on Monday, June 8, thunderstorms are expected to begin around 8 p.m. and continue into Tuesday morning, June 9, tapering off around 6 p.m.
The main threat is expected to be heavy rainfall which could cause flash flooding, according to the Detroit NWS.
“Highly variable storm total rainfall amounts expected, ranging from a quarter inch to highly localized 2+ inches in cases where multiple storms impact the same location,” Detroit NWS said on social media on June 8. “Thunderstorms will be capable of rainfall rates over 1″ per hour, causing the bulk of storm total rainfall to occur over short durations.”
Thunderstorms will pick up again in Lansing Wednesday morning, June 10.
Officials urge residents to have multiple ways of receiving weather alerts during the day and night if thunderstorms grow severe.
In addition, residents can help prevent heat-related illnesses by limiting outdoor time, staying hydrated and wearing lightweight clothing.
