LANSING — Police plan to use bicycle patrols, pop-up events at local parks and door-to-door safety chats as part of a strategy to stem summertime crime.
The Lansing Police Department said it will use a “coordinated and collaborated effort” among its specialty units, including the Violent Crime Initiative and Special Operations unit, and “focused enforcement” to prevent violence and make the city safer during the summer, when violence tends to be more frequent.
“Community partnerships will play a key role in the success of this plan,” the department said in a statement issued by Public Information Director Jordan Gulkis on June 20. “Communicating LPD’s directives and objectives to community members will be prioritized to entice involvement.”
The “2025 Summer Safety Plan” relies on “focused deterrence, data-driven, problem-oriented, and community policing strategies,” officials said.
Officers will patrol on bikes in “key areas” to be more visible, and the department will stage “Pop-up Patrol and Chill” events at local parks, offering light drinks, snacks and safety tips, the statement said.
They’ll also use foot patrols featuring “door-to-door safety chats” and do focused enforcement and driving enforcement, officials said.
