The mastermind behind one of the most popular annual preseason college football magazines ranks Michigan State near the bottom of the Big Ten heading into the 2025 season.
Phil Steele has released his preseason magazine and content that provides in-depth previews of essentially every team in the country. So what does he think of the Spartans? Well, not too highly.
In Steele’s rankings of all 136 FBS teams in the country, he has Michigan state coming in at No. 54. That’s one spot behind Colorado and one spot ahead of Mississippi State for reference.
Among Big Ten teams, Michigan State comes in at No. 15 out of 18 teams. Steele only has the Spartans ahead of Northwestern (No. 63), Maryland (No. 72) and Purdue (No. 106). Unfortunately for the Spartans, only the Terps are on Michigan State’s schedule this upcoming season.
Michigan State enters this season with low expectations from the national media and Steele is just another outlet that is expecting a fourth straight down season for the Spartans. I personally have Michigan State more in the middle tier of the Big Ten but also understand the national perception being low and in the “wait and see” camp for Michigan State.
