A 50-year-old Springfield, Ohio man died from injuries sustained while trimming a tree.
Around 7:05 p.m. Saturday, May 30, Monroe County Central Dispatch received a 911 call reporting that a tree had fallen and struck a worker in the area of Timber Lane near South Dixie Highway in Monroe Township, according to a news release from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies Hunter Chirillo and Brent Thomas responded to the scene, along with personnel from the Monroe Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.
“Despite their rapid response, the victim had succumbed to his injuries,” the news release said. “Preliminary investigation indicates that three men from the Dayton, Ohio area had been hired to remove a tree at a residence. The workers were cutting the final section of the tree, estimated to be approximately 30-feet in length. For reasons that remain under investigation, the victim reportedly attempted to grab one of the ropes as the tree was falling and was struck in the head by the descending tree.”
Deputies on scene were assisted by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Victim Services Unit and Sheriff’s Office chaplains. The victim was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been notified and is participating in the investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by Chirillo and Thomas along with Detective Skyler Riffle.
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 734-240-7530.
