MDOT awards Monroe County funding for $50,000 railroad crossing project

The Michigan Department of Transportation recently announced the recipients of the 10th annual Local Grade Crossing Surface Program, which includes the Monroe County Road Commission.

The program offers 60% funding for projects that improve highway railroad crossing surfaces.

“Transportation safety is a high priority for MDOT, and these projects will provide safe, smooth surfaces when completed,” said Peter Anastor, Office of Rail director at MDOT.

The Monroe County project will be helmed by Canadian National and replace the tracks at the Laplaisance Road railroad crossing. This segment of the road has an average daily traffic volume of over 10,000 cars and was resurfaced during the 2025 construction season. The project is estimated to cost $50,000.

“(This project will) kind of helpfully fill in that last, final gap of the rough crossing there, and make it from Dunbar to I-75, all the pavement there … should be in pretty good condition after this,” said Matthew Snell, Monroe County’s highway engineer.

The project is set to begin sometime between April and October and, according to Snell, may take two weeks. The road commission acts as a facilitator to ensure a smooth transition of the money from MDOT to Canadian National.
