The mystery donor behind a $100,000 donation for planned improvements to Village Square Park in Saugatuck has been revealed as The Kirk and Julie Cousins Foundation.
The announcement was made April 9, not long after Saugatuck City Council approved design and engineering services for the project — also made possible by a $150,000 Michigan DNR Recreation Passport Grant. The municipality is contributing $10,000.
Saugatuck Mayor Holly Anderson said the generosity was a driving force behind making improvements a reality.
“We are incredibly grateful for their investment in our community,” Anderson wrote in a release. “Their support, combined with the (grant), allows us to create a more inclusive, accessible and vibrant public space for everyone to enjoy.”
The improvements will modernize and enhance Village Square Park, resurfacing and expanding the basketball court, upgrading the tennis/pickleball court and adding a new shuffleboard court and additional seating.
The plan will also incorporate universal accessibility features and improved walkways. Construction is expected to begin this fall or next spring.
Kirk Cousins is a professional football player and graduate of Holland Christian High School. He recently signed with the Las Vegas Raiders.
