Holland Middle Schooler Daniela Kleinsasser took to Lake Macatawa in a homemade cardboard boat on July 11, according to a statement from her family.
Kleinsasser was joined by her uncle, Ben Miyamoto, of Washington DC. The two were inspired by Christy Conway’s Student Success Class, according to the statement, in which students made cardboard boats to paddle across the pool at Holland Aquatic Center.
Kleinsasser, encouraged by her uncle, set her goals higher for summer vacation. The duo worked on their cardboard boat for several days before setting sail on the northern shore of Lake Macatawa. They were followed by a support crew in a kayak and pontoon boat.
Kleinsasser and Miyamoto reached the southern shore in 50 minutes.
