Rocket Classic adds two more notables, including 2025 U.S. Open champ

Detroit — Two more big names have committed to playing the Rocket Classic later this month.

J.J. Spaun, who won the 2025 U.S. Open, and Patrick Cantlay will tee it up at Detroit Golf Club for the eighth and final playing of the Rocket Classic, from July 30-Aug. 2, tournament officials announced Friday.

Spaun, 35, is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, including last year’s U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, where he sealed the title with a 64-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole for his first major championship. He had been committed to playing the 2025 Rocket, but withdrew after the U.S. Open triumph to celebrate the victory with family and friends. He also won earlier this year, and he is No. 13 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Last year was the first time Spaun has missed the Rocket. He has finished tied for 13th or better three times in Detroit. He has four top-10 finishes this season, including a win at the Texas Open in April.

Cantlay, 34, is an eight-time winner on the PGA Tour who has played the Rocket twice before, finishing tied for second in 2022 and tied for 32nd last year. He has eighth top-25 finishes this season and is ranked No. 38 in the world.

Spaun and Cantlay, who both made the cut Friday at the British Open, give the Rocket field 12 players ranked in the top 50 in the world. The commitment deadline is Friday, July 24, and several players on the PGA Tour playoff bubble might consider Detroit a late add to the schedule. Detroit is the second-to-last tournament before the playoffs.
