HILLSDALE — Llamas fresh from pasture, minimal grooming and a strong sense of community marked the return of the Hillsdale Hobo Hootenany Llama Show at the Hillsdale County Fairgrounds.
The annual event, held April 11, drew llama owners and exhibitors from across the region for one of the first shows of the season. Unlike traditional livestock competitions, the Hobo Hootenany emphasizes participation and accessibility, allowing animals to compete without extensive preparation.
“It’s meant to allow you to bring your llamas in directly off of the pasture without any grooming involved,” said Amy Wiser, an exhibitor at the show. “So that’s why it’s called the hobo show.”
Participants competed in a variety of events designed to test both the animals and the handlers. Categories included showmanship, obstacle courses, public relations courses and pack courses, with opportunities for both adult and youth competitors.
The show is particularly welcoming for younger participants, who compete as part of organized youth groups.
“It gives them a chance to learn responsibility, animal handling and confidence,” Wiser said.
Beyond competition, the event served as a reunion for longtime participants beginning a new season together.
“It’s a community of llama lovers,” Wiser said. “The adults and the youth — it’s the same group of people we see at a lot of the shows. This is kind of the kickoff to our show season, and we’re really excited to see all our friends and start another season of showing.”
The Hobo Hootenany has become a fixture on Hillsdale’s spring calendar, offering a blend of agriculture, youth involvement and family-friendly entertainment. The relaxed format is intentionally designed to lower barriers for new exhibitors while still giving experienced handlers a chance to compete.
Spectators were able to watch events throughout the day while interacting with exhibitors and learning more about llamas as pack animals and show livestock.
Organizers said the event’s early-April timing makes it a popular starting point for the Michigan llama show circuit, setting the tone for months of competitions ahead.
