Five-star cornerback John Meredith III has committed to Texas Longhorns Football. The nation’s No. 2 2027 recruit announced his decision on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show. Meredith picked Texas over rival Texas A&M and Ohio State.
Meredith is actually ineligible for his upcoming season. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound DB transferred to Fort Worth North Crowley in January from Euless Trinity. The district determined the transfer was purely for athletic reasons and ruled him out for the 2026 season by a 5-2 vote. North Crowley will appeal the committee’s decision to the UIL State Executive Committee.
But Texas coach Steve Sarkisian won’t mind too much. He’s just happy to land the premier defensive prospect in the 2027 class. Meredith made three visits to the Forty Acres, his official visit was a couple of weeks ago. Notably, that visit was after his official visit to College Station.
“They’ve been coming real hard,” Meredith said of the Longhorns’ push earlier this spring. “Coach O is my dog. He’s been recruiting me hard.”
Meredith becomes UT’s highest ranked recruit in the 2027 class. He is the second five-star in the class, joining wide receiver Easton Royal. He is also the second big commitment of the week. Offensive tackle Brian Swanson committed on Wednesday.
Meredith is also the highest ranked defensive back commitment in Texas football recruiting history. Which is saying something considering three former Longhorns have won the Thorpe Award as the country’s best DB.
He’s the third top 100 2027 defender committed to the Longhorns. Outside linebacker Jabarrius Garror and defensive lineman Kasi Currie are both pledged to UT.
Longhorns cornerbacks coach Mark Orphey and first-year defensive coordinator Will Muschamp were reportedly key to landing the Texas native.
