The path forward for Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby is clear after he announced earlier this week that he would be applying for a spot in the NFL supplemental draft and opting not to play another year of college football.
While the destination may be the NFL, the path is still unknown, though.
Sorsby will go through the supplemental draft next month, where all 32 NFL teams will have the opportunity to bid future picks on him, with the highest ultimate getting the Cincinnati Bearcats transfer. The draft is done in a silent-auction style, so it’s hard to predict where exactly he will fall.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport thinks that teams will end up paying a pretty high price for him, though, since Sorsby could have been a second or third-round pick in this year’s draft, had he entered.
“Sorsby is gonna be the most high-profile player we’ve seen in a Supplemental Draft in quite some time,” Rapoport said. “You’re probably looking at either a second or maybe a third-round supplemental pick, if he is eligible to even be in it.”
Of course, that last part is the most important qualifier at this point. While Sorsby has applied for the supplemental draft, the NFL still has yet to approve it, which is up in the air considering the nature of his ineligibility for college football due to a gambling problem.
The expectation, though, is that he will be allowed into the supplemental draft. From there, we will see how much teams are willing to spend on him.
