Bucs' Yaya Diaby focused about whats on the field, not contract talks

Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher Yaya Diaby is entering one of the most important seasons of his young career, but don’t expect contract talks to become a distraction. Diaby made it clear that he’s not focused on a potential extension. Instead, the former Louisville standout is keeping his attention on the field.

For Diaby, the mindset is simple. Keep working, keep producing, and let everything else take care of itself. That approach makes sense considering the circumstances surrounding Tampa Bay’s pass rush over the last several seasons. Since Diaby emerged as one of the team’s top edge defenders, the Buccaneers have struggled to find a consistent running mate opposite him.

The organization spent years hoping former first-round pick Joe Tryon-Shoyinka would develop into that player. While flashes were there, the production never consistently followed. Last season, the Buccaneers turned to veteran Haason Reddick in hopes of boosting the pass rush while also continuing to develop 2024 second-round pick Chris Braswell.

However, neither player emerged as the long-term answer opposite Diaby.

As a result, opposing offenses often had the luxury of doubling Diaby for entire games. That could finally change this season. The Buccaneers drafted Rueben Bain Jr at 15th overall, one of the most physically gifted and NFL-ready pass rushers in the draft class. Bain arrives in Tampa Bay with a reputation for being able to win with power, leverage, and relentless effort, traits that should translate quickly to the pro level.

While expecting a rookie to immediately become a double-digit sack producer may be unrealistic, Bain’s presence alone should help Diaby. Offensive lines will no longer be able to focus their protection plans solely on one side of the formation. If Bain develops as expected, quarterbacks could find themselves dealing with pressure from both edges for the first time in Diaby’s career. And if that happens, the production should skyrocket. Diaby is betting on himself.

With additional talent finally arriving alongside him, the 2026 season may provide the perfect opportunity for the Buccaneers’ top edge rusher to have his biggest year yet and earn that extension in the process.
