Airport's young golf team makes impressive debut at state finals

Airport’s boys golf team is young.

But the Jets didn’t show their inexperience at the Division 2 state finals at The Meadows at Grand Valley State University on Saturday, June 6.

The Jets, making their first appearance in school history in the finals, took 13th place. They shot 324 Friday and 330 Saturday.

“I am extremely proud and happy with the way we played all season,” Airport coach Willie Hammar said. “We are certainly young. We had two seniors but a lot of talent up and down the board.”

Junior Brayden Siders led Airport with rounds of 75 and 80 for a two-day total of 155. He was followed by sophomore Evan Mullins with an 80-84—164 and freshman Cade Horner with 82-83—165.

Junior Landon McGregor and senior Sam Mitocariu tied for the fourth spot at 172.

New Boston Huron freshman Brendyn Raschke shot 86-91—177 for 93rd place individually.

Bedford’s Taleon Guess had the best day of any Monroe County Region golfer. He placed 36th in the Division 1 finals at the Katke Course at Ferris State University with a 73-78—151.

Flat Rock placed 15th as a team in the Division 3 finals at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek with 351-340—691.

Ben Scully 84-83—167 and Collin Gilleran 87-81—168 led the Rams. They were supported by Joel Scully 91-86—177 and Landon Higdon 90-90—180.

Individually, Fischer Zawacki of Whiteford was 44th with 85-82—167 and Ida’s Connor Zimmerman was 60th with 89-82—171.

Summerfield had two individuals in the Division 4 finals at Michigan State’s Forest Akers West. James Feudi shot 81-83—164 for 16th place and Logan Schwichtenberg was 76th with 91-94—188.

Huron dominates all-league

NEW BOSTON – To the victors go the spoils.

New Boston Huron, which cruised through the Huron League schedule undefeated, had 10 players honored by league coaches when they selected th All-League team.

Maggie Mentzer, Avery Turk, Brooke Burke and Miley Skamiera made the first team, Ava Banko, Malaya Singer and Maiya Thomas second and Nhi Vo, Kayla Christesen and Leah Purcell honorable mention.

Payton Toth, Olivia Bucki and Lena Boegdain of Airport, Emma Walline of Milan, Camryn Cousino of Jefferson, Nora Kinsey of St. Mary Catholic Central and Sophia Ellison of Flat Rock also made the first team.

Second-team choices were Olvia Gratz and Emily Begeman of Airport, Alvia Held and Elle Budd of Milan, Kate Otting and Madalyn Thompson Jefferson, Quinn Harrington of SMCC and Kendyl Servantes of Flat Rock.

Ella Marut, Marissa Chapdelaine and Alejandra Najera of Airport, Molly Walline and Charlotte Finch of Milan, Alena Schafer and Alaina Rosensteel of Jeffeson, Belle Morin of SMCC and Carlee Balogh of Flat Rock received honorable mention.
