ESPN recently released statistical projections for the 2026 rookie class, with Rueben Bain Jr. projected to finish among the NFL’s top rookie pass rushers this season.
Bain was projected for 5.6 sacks during his rookie year, ranking third among all rookies behind David Bailey and Malachi Lawrence.
The projection reflects both opportunity and historical context. ESPN noted that rookie sack production across the league has been relatively inconsistent in recent years, with very few first-year pass rushers reaching double-digit sacks immediately after entering the NFL.
That makes Bain’s projection fairly notable despite the number itself not appearing overwhelming on paper. A 5.6-sack rookie season would still place him among the better first-year pass rushers from recent draft classes.
Tampa Bay is also expected to give Bain opportunities early within Todd Bowles’ defense. The Buccaneers drafted him to help improve a pass rush that lacked consistent finishing production throughout portions of the 2025 season.
How Bain is deployed may ultimately determine whether he can outperform the projection. Tampa Bay has already discussed using him in multiple alignments across the defensive front rather than limiting him strictly to a traditional edge role.
