Three unhoused men found dead in High Desert on Sunday afternoon

Two unhoused men living in Victorville and another in Hesperia were discovered dead within a period of less than eight hours on Sunday, authorities said.

The causes and manners of death for all three men, who ranged in age from 40 to 61, were yet to be determined by San Bernardino County coroner’s investigators. No signs of foul play were noted in any of the cases, according to law enforcement officials.

The first death was reported about 12:05 p.m. May 17 at Main Street and Key Pointe Drive in Hesperia, according to sheriff-coroner’s records.

The identity of the 40-year-old man has not been released.

“Deputies were called to the location by a witness who observed a male who was unresponsive,” sheriff’s department spokeswoman Jenny Smith said. “Upon arrival deputies found the male without a pulse.”

The man died at the scene, she said. “No suspicious circumstances noted at the time of the call.”

First responders were then called about 3:20 p.m. to the 15000 block of Roy Rodgers, where 50-year-old Samuel Gastelum was found crouched over behind a business, according to Smith. A good Samaritan checked his pulse and found it to be weak.

“The witness reported administering Narcan to the male before deputies arrived,” Smith said. “Upon deputy arrival, lifesaving measures were initiated until medical personnel arrived.”

Gastelum died at the scene.

Sunday’s third death was discovered about 7 p.m. at Monarch Boulevard and Cottonwood Avenue in Victorvile.

A 61-year-old man, whose identity was yet to be released, was found unconscious by a passer-by, Smith said.

“As the deputy arrived an adult male was found and pronounced deceased at the scene,” she said. No further details regarding the circumstances of the death were available.

Autopsies will be carried out to determine how each man died.
