A 54-year-old man has been found guilty of first-degree manslaughter in the 2024 shooting death of a 20-year-old in Pleasant Valley.
Thomas Case’s conviction followed five and a half days of trial testimony and six days of jury deliberations, according to Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi.
Case was accused of fatally shooting Anthony Cuozzo during a dispute at a Pleasant Valley residence on Oct. 5, 2024.
When New York State Police and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home on Rawls Road that day, they determined Cuozzo had stabbed Case in the chest and Case had in turn shot Cuozzo multiple times.
Cuozzo was taken to Vassar Hospital where authorities said he died from his injuries.
Ultimately, the jury concluded Case intentionally killed Cuozzo by shooting him multiple times with a firearm, acting under the influence of extreme emotional disturbance.
“This verdict reflects the careful and deliberate work of the jury after hearing extensive testimony and evidence over the course of this trial,” Parisi said in a May 15 statement. “While no verdict can undo the tragic loss of a young life, today’s conviction represents accountability for the unlawful taking of Anthony Cuozzo’s life.”
Case’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 8, 2026. He faces a determinate sentence of between 5 and 25 years in prison, according to the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office.
“I want to commend the members of the jury for their service and attention to this difficult case, as well as the New York State Police and the prosecution team for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to seeking justice,” Parisi said.
