Michigan athletics seeks approval for new men's gymnastics facility

The Michigan athletics department is seeking Board of Regents approval for a $29 million project that would create a men’s gymnastics training center.

This project, which will be funded by athletic department resources, will be presented to the Regents during their Thursday meeting, according to the agenda released Monday. Integrated Architecture will design the project.

Michigan’s men’s gymnastics team won the 2025 national championship, the program’s seventh, and owns 21 Big Ten titles. Currently, the team practices in the Coliseum building, which is planned for demolition.

What the proposal, signed by athletic director Warde Manuel and CFO Robert Hewlett, lays out is a state-of-the-art 31,000-square foot training center built next to the Bahna Wrestling Center. It will include practice areas, locker rooms and athletic training areas, as well as staff offices. The project will eliminate 70 parking spots.

The proposal indicates the cash flow may be provided “all or in part, by” bond or note proceeds secured by a pledge of general revenues and authorized by the Regents.

Also on the agenda is approval for Michigan Stadium fireworks for the Morgan Wallen concerts July 24-25. Concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) has selected Pyrotek Special Effects Inc. and FFP Effects Inc. for the fireworks displays during the two shows. A full safety, fire protection, and security plan for the show, the proposal says, also has been submitted and reviewed by the Michigan athletics department.
