4-time Super Bowl-winning former 49ers coach dies at 83

Last week, the San Francisco 49ers lost a member of their 1981 Super Bowl-winning team, as tight end Charlie Young, who spent three seasons with the 49ers, died at 75 years old.

Just days later, the 49ers have lost another member of their family, as former running backs and wide receivers coach Sherman Lewis died at 83 years old on Friday.

Lewis was an All-American running back at Michigan State before playing for the Toronto Argonauts and Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL, the New York Jets in the NFL and the Waterbury Orbits of the Atlantic Coast Football League.

After his playing career, Lewis returned to his alma mater, where he coached for 14 seasons. He made the jump to the NFL with San Francisco in 1983. He spent eight seasons as their running backs coach and one final season in 1991 as wide receivers coach.

With the 49ers, Lewis won three Super Bowls.

Following his tenure in San Francisco, Louis served as offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers from 1992-99 (winning a fourth Super Bowl), Minnesota Vikings from 2000-01 and Detroit Lions from 2003-04. After four years out of coaching, he returned for one final year in 2009 as a consultant with Washington.
