Motor City Comic Con fans bring characters to life

Novi — Comic books and characters came to life at the Motor City Comic Con as attendees shopped for art, comics and trinkets, met celebrities from their favorite shows and attended panels on gaming, cosplaying and illustrating.

Many, including 52-year-old Bob Dickinson, were dressed as characters from “Daredevil,” a Marvel comic and TV show about Matt Murdock, an attorney by day and crime-fighting vigilante Daredevil by night.

Dickinson, of Burton, was dressed as “Daredevil” villain Wilson Fisk, wearing a white suitcoat and purple tie and carrying a cane with a diamond handle. He and his wife Michelle Dickinson had met Charlie Cox, who plays Murdock in the Marvel TV show, Saturday morning.

Bob Dickinson proudly carried a red Daredevil mask that Cox had signed earlier in the day.

“He was very personable, I enjoyed it,” Dickinson said.

The Dickinsons said their favorite part of Comic Con was seeing all the creative costumes around the event. Some people were dressed up as their favorite Marvel superheros or villains — many as Cox’s Daredevil — Scooby Doo characters, Super Mario characters or anime characters. Others wore T-shirts with their favorites on them or had a lanyard with pins around their neck.

But Paityn Desjardin, 16, of Watervliet came dressed as her own original character she created, a girl named Dakie. Dressed entirely in white, with floor-length white wings, a tall metal tiara, white eyelashes and white lipstick, Paityn was ecstatic to bring her character to life.

Paityn said she created Dakie six years ago and has written books, drawn cartoons and animated and illustrated photos of Dakie, who is an angel and demon trying to find a way to save her people as they begin to go extinct.

“I’ve always been such a big fan of anime and animation,” Paityn said. “I enjoy making my own characters so much.”
