Now You Know: Student winners of calendar contest revealed

Keep Collier Beautiful recently announced the winners of the 2027 calendar art contest, organized in partnership with Collier County Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Division and Collier County Schools.

Collier County Solid & Hazardous Waste Management visits K-12 schools to educate students about recycling, proper disposal, litter control and area initiatives to protect the environment. Students are then invited to express themselves artistically by submitting an original piece for the art contest.

Out of 851 submissions from 16 schools, volunteer judges selected the top 14 winning entries for the front cover, back cover, and each month of the year.

The calendar, which will be released in September. You can request a copy of the calendar by emailing recycling@colliercountyfl.gov.

In celebration of the students’ creativity and participation in protecting the environment, the winning artwork is on display in the Collier County Board of County Commissioners’ chambers.

Lionfish Challenge expands with new categories, prize opportunities

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s  Lionfish Challenge will kick off May 22 and run through Sept. 14. It will feature several exciting new competition categories designed to recognize a wider range of participants and prize packages.

The previous titles have been replaced with the following awards:

The FWC Lionfish Challenge will also recognize its Top Supporter and Top FWC Lionfish checkpoint participant. Lionfish are an invasive species.

“Lionfish derbies and the FWC Lionfish Challenge are a great way to help reduce lionfish numbers on coral reefs,” said Tony Hart, FWC Lionfish Outreach Coordinator. “Divers who participate are supporting conservation and doing their part to protect the vital marine resources in and around Florida’s waters.”
