EAST LANSING — The person fatally shot by East Lansing police after a Lansing area attorney was stabbed on April 15 has been identified.
East Lansing police said the Ingham County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Isaiah Christopher Kirby, 21, from Owings, Maryland.
East Lansing police described the incident as a stabbing that led to a fatal shooting by officers at a business at Lake Lansing and Abbot roads shortly after 6 p.m. April 15. While on the way to an initial call regarding a theft from a business, a 911 caller reported that a victim had been stabbed. When police arrived, they fatally shot the stabbing suspect, officials said.
Douglas Mielock, an attorney with the Foster Swift law firm, was the victim of “a random act of violence” near Abbot and Lake Lansing roads on Wednesday evening, Foster Swift said in a statement on April 16. Police said he was released from a local hospital where he was taken in critical condition, and is now recovering at home.
East Lansing police said they have started the process of reviewing and producing a video timeline of the events which they will share publicly “in the upcoming weeks.” They added that the names of the officers involved in the shooting will also be released at that time. Police have not said how many officers were involved.

The release of Kirby’s name was the first identifying information police released about the person they described as a suspect in the stabbing. Police did not previously release any information about Kirby, including gender, age or hometown.
Police confirmed last week that Mielock did not know Kirby.
In the news conference in the hours after the stabbing and shooting, East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown said officers were on their way to a theft call when they learned of another call from a neighboring business involving a stabbing. When they arrived, they found a person covered in blood and holding an object believed to be a weapon, a knife, she added.
Officers ordered the person to drop the knife, but they did not, she said. Medical personnel examined the suspect at the scene and the person was pronounced dead.
State police are investigating the shooting, which is standard practice for many Michigan police departments.
