The only private residence in Florida designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright went on the market over the summer after roughly seven decades.
The Spring House, built for Tallahassee’s Lewis family in 1954, the namesake of the historic Lewis State Bank, had an asking price of $2.1 million back in August.
Byrd Mashburn, daughter of the late Clifton Lewis and George Lewis II, said there was no mystery about why she was ready to sell the architectural gem: “It’s just the right time for me … It’s the right time for the family.”
The house, just off of U.S. 27 north of the interstate, was imagined by Wright at the humble behest of the Lewises. The couple made it home for them and their four children. Its unusual pod-shape curves represent one of Wright’s last hemicycle designs, drawing Wright enthusiasts from near and far.

Spring House, a 2,040 square-feet home built on 10 acres in the woods, is unlike many of Wright’s grand works. Its three bedrooms are relatively small.
“One of his design theories was that families should be close together and interact more,” said Mashburn of Wright’s approach. “We were together most of the time because the kitchen goes right into the dining room table. And the dining room table is basically in the living room.”

Visitors and admirers have descended onto the property for scores of community and private events. From fundraisers and weddings to camp outings, such as MoLab Inc.’s Camp Spark, which gave children an up-close lesson in architecture, it was beloved.
Industry peers share impact of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Spring House work in Florida
Wright, whose 70-year career stretched from 1889 until his death in 1959, is famous for dramatic architectural achievements like the Guggenheim Museum in New York – which opened to the public five years after Spring House was built.
Among his peers, Wright is considered one of the most preeminent architects of his time, said Rodney Lewis, a principal and co-founder of Tallahassee-based Architects Lewis + Whitlock, adding “he continues to be influential.”
Lewis, who is not related to the Lewises, has been to the home several times for historical meetings and other outings. He describes it as “a quirky, small, interesting space from an interior perspective.”
