Suspect arrested in 2023 mass shooting in Peoria that killed teenager

PEORIA − A suspect was held Friday on first-degree murder charges in a mass shooting in 2023 that left six people injured. One victim later died of his injuries.

Jyvonnie J. Williams Jr. was taken into custody without incident by personnel assigned to the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division and the United States Marshals Service. The 22-year-old was transported to the Peoria Police Department to be interviewed and was then arrested on first-degree murder charges. Williams was being held at the Peoria County Jail, the Peoria Police Department said in a news release.

On Aug. 30, 2023, police responded to the 2200 block of West Marquette Avenue in South Peoria on two Shot Spotter alerts showing a total of 29 rounds fired. Officers found multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Six people were taken to a local hospital, five with gunshot wounds and one with a laceration. The victims included two men and four juvenile males. The mass shooting made national news.

A month later, Antonio Walker, 16, of Peoria, died at Peoria’s OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center after nearly a month of “aggressive treatment” was unsuccessful in saving his life.
