NEW PHILADELPHIA ‒ Four organizations will join together to sponsor a John Lewis Day rally and community service event at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse in New Philadelphia from 4:30 to 6 p.m. July 17.
The event takes place on the day that former U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, died. He was a well-known civil rights activist.

“Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people,” said Karen Izzi Gallagher, the event organizer.
The phrase good trouble is associated with Lewis, to describe the activism needed to challenge injustice and achieve meaningful change.
“A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values,” she said.
The Rev. Robert M. Eller will speak. Zack Baer will provide music.
Participants are encouraged to donate blood at the Dover Public Library, 525 N. Walnut St., from 3 to 6 p.m. that day at a drive sponsored by the Tuscarawas County Young Democrats and the OSU Alumni Club of Tuscarawas County.
In addition, there will be boxes for those attending the rally to donate to the Rainbow Connection, an organization the serves the disabled and disadvantaged residents of Tuscarawas County and the organizations and schools that serve them.
The rally is being sponsored by the Coexistence Movement, the Tuscarawas County Democratic Party, Indivisible.org and the 50501 movement.
