Rios, who was named the head football coach at Banquete in May, will now be the Coyotes’ next assistant athletic director and girls coordinator.

Rios said the Alice ISD board meeting for his hiring is scheduled for July 21.

“I’ve been grinding for 30 years so I’m excited to go into the administration part of things,” Rios said. “The last few jobs I’ve been a coordinator and now I will be more hands-on with all the coaches.”

Rios will be reunited with Alice athletic director and head football coach JR Castellano. The two most recently coached together at Taft in 2022 and in Refugio in 2006.

Rios was an assistant at Banquete last season and has previous head coaching experience at Bishop, Hebbronville, Falfurrias and Premont, where he got his first head coaching job in 2002.

In his career, Rios has led five teams to the playoffs, including a district championship in 2014 with Hebbronville.

“It was a family decision and now I get to share my knowledge with the younger coaches and help develop them,” Rios said. “I want to share my knowledge and help them stay in this profession. The profession has always has always been good to me so now I want to pay it forward.”
