El Paso police chase ends in New Mexico standoff, lockdowns

A man is jailed in El Paso after a police chase across the Texas-New Mexico state line that sparked a standoff and lockdowns in Anthony, New Mexico.

Miguel Angel Anchondo, 28, who is a New Mexico resident, was arrested on two felony counts of evading arrest with a vehicle. He was booked on a total bond of $65,000 at the El Paso County jail in Downtown on Sunday, April 19, according to jail records. No attorney is listed for him as of Monday, April 20.

One of the evading-arrest cases stems from the chase on Friday, April 17, and the other is from March 30, according to a jail log. An investigation continues, the El Paso Police Department added.

Texas-New Mexico law enforcement response

El Paso police spokeswoman Detective Judy Oviedo said in a news release Monday that the incident started Friday when police attempted a traffic stop on Sunland Park Drive next to The Shoppes at Solana.

The driver, identified by police as Anchondo, allegedly refused to stop and the Texas Department of Public Safety joined the pursuit, which crossed into Anthony, New Mexico.

Anchondo allegedly barricaded himself at a house in Anthony, leading to a multi-agency standoff involving Anthony police, the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State Police and others.

Anthony City Hall, schools lockdown

As a precaution, Anthony City Hall went into a lockdown and Anthony Pre-K school and Anthony and Loma Linda elementary schools went to a secure hold.

Anthony (N.M.) Police Chief Aurora Hernandez said on a Facebook post that two people were taken into custody by 5:45 p.m. Friday, April 17, and the standoff ended. The identity of the second person and whether they face any charges was not disclosed.

Anchondo was jailed in New Mexico before being extradited to Texas and booked into the El Paso County jail on Sunday, El Paso police officials said.

“The El Paso Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to all assisting agencies for their swift response, coordination, and commitment to public safety,” EPPD said in a statement.
