SOUTH BEND — Venues Parks & Arts presents a screening of “A League of Their Own” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 11, at Howard Park, 219 S. St. Louis Blvd., as part of its Movies in the Park series.
Penny Marshall directed the 1992 film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, a Midwest-based women’s baseball league Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley founded in 1943 as a way to keep interest in baseball alive during World War II.
The league survived until 1954 and included the South Bend Blue Sox for its entire existence.
The film stars Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O’Donnell.
The evening begins with games, giveaways and entertainment, including a juggling show from the Michiana Jugglers Association.
The History Museum, which serves as the national repository for the AAGPBL’s archives, will display rare artifacts from its AAGPBL collection, including signed bats, gloves, uniforms and caps, many of which were used by the players themselves.
The History Museum’s registrar, Catherine Page-Vanore, will speak about the league and about Blue Sox player Betsy “Sockum” Jochum, who died May 31 at the age of 104.
As part of that memorial, The History Museum will display personal memorabilia, including her baseball cards and photographs.
Waka Dog Café will be on-site, too.
The film begins at 6:30 p.m.
The screening had originally been scheduled for June 13 but was moved because of weather issues.
Other movies in the series include “Finding Nemo” on Aug. 15 and “Coco” on Oct. 17.
Admission is free.
