The Diocese of Corpus Christi has a new superintendent of schools.
Rebecca Hammel is replacing Rosemary Henry, who is “exploring other opportunities” after being with the Diocese of Corpus Christi for 10 years, diocese spokesperson Jesse De Leon said in an email.
Hammel, who previously held the same title at the Diocese of Dallas for two years, said her goals in her new role are to support staff and instill Catholic education in students.
“We want parents to understand that when (their children) come to a Catholic school, they’re getting so much more than academic excellence,” Hammel said in a YouTube video. “They’re getting faith formation, and they’re getting all of that development for the soul of the child.”
The Rev. Bishop Michael Mulvey said in a news release that he is thankful for Hammel coming to the Diocese of Corpus Christi. He said he hopes she is welcomed by the community.
Hammel said schools within the Diocese of Corpus Christi will teach children “to be a person for others, to be a child of God and to be a servant of God as an adult.”
“I look forward to having all of our schools fully thrive in meeting their local missions and realizing all they can do to be the best school they possibly can, where they’re providing academic excellence while also operating at full vitality and bringing every possible program to life in the school building,” Hammel said.
