UPDATE: Crews gain upper hand on 20-acre Clement Fire in Happy Valley

Firefighters were making good progress on a vegetation fire in Happy Valley that quickly prompted the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office to order evacuations.

The Clement Fire was holding at 20 acres as crews managed to surround the fire with hose line, according to scanner reports. The fire was initially reported at 5 acres and burning north before crews got the upper hand.

Officials started to release equipment from the scene just before 3 p.m. Friday, June 13, according to scanner reports.

The blaze was reported around 1:35 p.m. Friday in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and Clement Court, and it burned north toward the China Gulch Drive neighborhood.

Evacuations ordered

Authorities called for mandatory evacuations in the China Gulch Drive neighborhood north of Hawthorne Avenue. Zones 7930, 7940 and 7800 were evacuated. Evacuees were asked to go to the Happy Valley Store at 4211 Happy Valley Road.

Also, China Gulch Drive at Oak Street were closed due to the fire.

Aircraft was launched to help fight the fire.
