Wisconsin basketball legend and current NBA G League forward Frank Kaminsky didn’t mince words when reviewing Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2 last week.
Kaminsky, arguably the greatest men’s basketball player to ever represent the Badgers, took to social media this past weekend to share his thoughts on the high-profile sequel.
“Happy Gilmore 2 is maybe the worst movie I’ve ever seen,” Kaminsky said on X on Friday.
The UW icon replied to his initial post, which garnered over one million impressions as of July 27, with another bit of commentary:
“Outside of the Scottie Scheffler getting arrested scene, I don’t think I laughed once,” Kaminsky said. “The amount of cameos and stupid scenes was such a slap in the face to the original movie.”
Released in 1996, Sandler’s initial film became as culturally relevant as any golf film over the past 30 years. Starring Carl Weathers, Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller, the slapstick comedy chronicles Sandler’s journey as a hockey hopeful to the apex of the golf universe.
Set decades into the future, the sequel features cameos from stars including Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, Eminem and Kid Cudi. Pro golf fixtures Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka and John Daly also play prominent roles alongside returning cast members Sandler, McDonald, Bowen and Stiller.
The movie has received mixed reviews since its July 25 release. It currently has a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes — three points better than the first movie’s score. Some have touted the comedic genius of the sequel, while others, including Kaminsky, were not impressed.
Either way, Sandler’s latest creation will be remembered in some fashion. One of X’s July 27 trending topics was titled ‘Happy Gilmore 2 Premieres with Mixed Feedback,’ encapsulating the attitude towards the movie.
