SHEBOYGAN COUNTY – An update on Rupp’s closure, the opening of a local winery’s second location and early site work on Sargento’s new manufacturing site were among the top business stories in October.
In other business news, USA TODAY readers ranked Plank Road Distillery’s craft rum among the top 10 best in the country again, Sargento and Carbliss made it to the Top 8, but not the top 4, in the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest, and the Sheboygan Press featured a beauty studio.
Here’s what else you might’ve missed.
What we learned about the Rupp’s closure
Social media buzzed in late September about why Rupp’s was closed after new owners took over operations.
The Sheboygan Press learned from the owners’ publicist that the restaurant and lounge are closed for renovations.
The lounge could reopen in a couple months, but the restaurant is likely to be closed until the spring.
The Mad Patcher patches, creates new clothing with upcycled textiles
We featured Baxter Salzwedel, 21, and his sustainable clothing brand, The Mad Patcher, which recently finished its first season in the downtown Elkhart Lake Historic Depot and Museum.
The Mad Patcher can repair, customize and create new clothing with upcycled textiles. Salzwedel said the brand sorts through 1,000 pounds of textiles a year, sourced from thrift stores, vintage resellers and donations.
The Blind Horse Cellar opens in Cedarburg
The Blind Horse Restaurant & Winery’s second location, Blind Horse Cellar, opened in downtown Cedarburg Oct. 8. It offers a taste of the atmosphere and offerings at the Kohler location, with a full wine portfolio, limited food menu and patio.
The historic property dates to the 1840s, and underwent significant renovations starting in spring 2024.
Early site work seen on new Sargento manufacturing site
Some early site work for the new 384,000-square-foot Sargento Foods manufacturing facility was seen in early October.
The company could begin construction on the site in the spring to house offices, warehouses, production and cooler spaces for manufacturing capabilities that will be moved to the headquarters at 1 Persnickety Place in Plymouth.
