FOND DU LAC COUNTY – A 23-year-old Waupun man was arrested after authorities said he drove the wrong way on U.S. 151 and led a Fond du Lac County sheriff’s deputy on a high-speed pursuit early June 19.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy was parked in the median on U.S. 151 north of State 49 in the town of Waupun when he saw a southbound vehicle cross the median and begin traveling south in the northbound lanes.
The deputy activated his emergency lights and siren while trying to stop the vehicle and warn other drivers, the sheriff’s office said. The vehicle traveled about a half mile in the wrong lanes, passing several vehicles, before pulling onto the shoulder and attempting to correct course.
Authorities said the deputy caught up to the vehicle as it turned onto South Frontage Road from the State 26 northbound on-ramp. The driver continued west on South Frontage Road at a high speed, then went south on Mill Road and east on Oak Center Road.
The sheriff’s office said the vehicle reached about 130 mph and did not stop for about 4 miles on Oak Center Road before finally pulling over. Deputies made a high-risk traffic stop, and the driver was taken into custody without incident. The man’s name was not released.
The pursuit lasted about 4.5 miles. No patrol vehicles or other motorists’ vehicles were damaged, and no injuries were reported.
The man was arrested on suspected charges of felony fleeing and eluding and operating while under the influence, along with several traffic citations, the sheriff’s office said.
The Waupun Police Department assisted the sheriff’s office.
