'Warm weather' kickstarts apple-picking season at Apple Holler earlier than usual

Fall hasn’t arrived early, but a beloved seasonal activity has at one orchard in southeast Wisconsin.

Apple Holler — a pick-your-own apple orchard and farm park in Sturtevant (5006 S. Sylvania Ave.) — opened for apple picking earlier this month.

“Warm weather” has made the orchard’s Lodi apples “ready to pick earlier than expected,” a post on the orchard’s Instagram says. These kinds of green apples, typically used in apple sauces, ripen early on in the season to begin with, according to the Arbor Day Foundation.

Last year, the orchard opened for the season on July 12, which was believed to be the earliest it had ever opened. Apple Holler typically opens for apple-picking season in early August, manager Elyse Flannery told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in July 2024.

Flannery confirmed in an email the orchard will officially open for apple picking season on Aug. 1.

Another early start to apple-picking season isn’t the only new thing out of the orchard this summer. Visitors have been able to partake in peach picking for the first time since 2022.
