As Congress debates federal spending, one area that should be top of their mind is election security.
Investing in our elections is one of the smartest decisions we can make. Clerks across Wisconsin do a great job running elections. However, the environment around them is rapidly changing. An increase in physical and cyber threats in recent years has made running elections more challenging. These threats are regularly evolving, which makes it difficult for officials to react and prepare for the next election.
One way to fortify our elections would be for Congress to prioritize continual, consistent funding for election infrastructure. A long-term plan for these federal resources would give local and county governments the opportunity to plan and think proactively about the investments that are needed.
Congress made a substantial investment during the first Trump administration, with hundreds of millions of dollars going to election security in 2018 and 2020. Investments like that, especially when they are done consistently, strengthen our election systems and voter confidence.
Elections are the backbone of every decision the government makes. I hope that leaders in Washington will focus on funding our elections — voters across the country deserve elections that are secure and trustworthy.
