These five Wisconsin cities are among the country's best for retirees

Five Wisconsin cities were included on a list of the country’s best cities for retirees compiled by Investopedia.

The finance website looked at more than 500 U.S. cities, selecting the top 100 based on climate, health care, cost of living and community. Investopedia scored each city out of 100 and ranked the best, though the online rankings do not include the numeric values each city was assigned.

“All 100 offer affordable living costs, easy health care access and cultural and recreational opportunities, plus much more,” the website says.

Of the Midwest states, Wisconsin had the second-most cities in Investopedia’s top 100. Only Iowa, with 13 cities in the top 100, had more.

What about the Midwest appeals to retirees? 

The Midwest is affordable, with cheaper housing, grocers and other items, Investopedia said.

A retiree’s dollar stretches further in the Midwest, and Investopedia’s report also says the region’s tax burden is low compared to other parts of the country.

What makes Appleton a good place to retire?  

Appleton is a “lively yet relaxed retirement destination,” Investopedia said, mixing “Midwestern charm and a bustling cultural scene.” The city has a low cost of living, an active arts scene and quality medical care.  

“Appleton brings together cultural energy, community warmth and financial practicality in ways that many other retirement locations can’t do,” the report said. “For retirees who want a quieter pace of life, but don’t want to give up on artistic and mental stimulation, Appleton offers plenty to keep them occupied.”
