WHBY and Ben Cominos have parted ways.
The Appleton news/talk station made the announcement June 23 on Facebook with this statement:
“Ben Cominos is no longer with WHBY. WHBY will discontinue its political talk programming block from 8:30A-11A previously held by Ben Cominos with Outside the Box. We wish Ben nothing but the best moving forward. Additional details for local programming will be released in the upcoming weeks.”
Cominos, a Pittsburgh native who had been at the Woodward Community Media station since August 2022, was the host of weekday show “Outside the Box.”
WHBY broadcasts at 103.5 FM in Appleton, 106.3 FM in Oshkosh and AM 1150.
In a Facebook post and video June 22, Cominos also shared the news but did not elaborate on the circumstances.
“I’m not going to bury the lede, I’m no longer employed by WHBY,” Cominos wrote. “Outside the Box will still live on though. My show has been picked up by Minocqua Brewing.”
According to the Cominos post, beginning June 29, “Outside the Box” will stream 9 to 11 a.m. weekdays on the Minocqua Brewing Co. Times Substack and on his own Facebook, TikTok and YouTube accounts. On his YouTube channel, the show is described as “a working class political show for the people that feel left behind by the 2-party system.”
In his video, Cominos told viewers he was looking ahead.
“For the record, while I might be a little bit frustrated as to the way things have played out here, I’m not one to dwell on things for too long, and I do have to say that the Fox Valley has been a second home to me for the last three and a half years, and I’m very fortunate to have a capacity to build my career, get better and most importantly, develop a bunch of relationships with all of you guys, not just here, but specifically in our neck of the woods.”
The Minocqua Brewing Substack defines itself as daily columns curated by Minocqua Brewing owner Kirk Bangstad, “with guests columnists who combat right-wing media misinformation.”
His announcement came the same day that Biff, a weekend on-air personality at Woodward-owned 95.9 KISS-FM, a Top 40 station, posted his position at the station had been eliminated.
