Strong gas smell spreads in Rock County after leak at Alliant Energy station

A pinhole leak at Alliant Energy’s Tiffany Gate natural gas station is causing a strong gas smell to spread throughout the area on July 4, according to a company statement.

On Friday morning, a lightning strike caused a small leak in an odorizer line at the Tiffany Gate station, which is located between Janesville and Beloit. Crews responded immediately to shut off the odorizer, and there is no ongoing risk to public safety, the company said.

On its own, natural gas is odorless, but a strong odorant is added to the gas to alert people in case of a leak.

As of 11 a.m. Friday, Alliant Energy was still working to neutralize the odorant that released while the leak was active. Residents in the area may continue to notice a gas-like odor.

Customers who smell gas or suspect a gas leak in their home should call 911 or 1-800-ALLIANT (1-800-255-4268), the company added.
