Sparhawk files notice of potential layoffs or closure as it seeks buyer

WISCONSIN RAPIDS – Sparhawk may face layoffs or close if it can’t find a buyer as the company works through its bankruptcy case.

According to a notice of business closing or mass layoff letter to the Department of Workforce Development filed May 28, 2026, the bank is allowing Sparhawk Trucking Inc. and Sparhawk Truck and Trailer Inc. to operate as usual at the moment, but the Sparhawk companies are actively looking for a buyer.

According to the letter, if Sparhawk is unable to find a buyer that will allow the business to stay open or if a new buyer does not hire all of the existing employees, a mass layoff or plant closing notice could follow.

The letter, sent to the DWD’s Dislocated Worker Unit, Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Matt Zacher, the North Central Workforce Development Board and North Central Job Centers, indicated employees should not count on a sale.

“No employee should count on the business remaining open or mass layoffs not taking place,” the letter said.

The letter stated the company had a duty to inform the appropriate contacts the companies may close or issue a mass layoff on or before 60 days of the notice dated May 28. The letter went on to state it’s impossible to determine if any employees would be laid off, if the companies would close or if any positions will be cut.

“We do know that once such layoffs occur or the business closes, such layoffs or business closure is very likely to be permanent,” the letter said.

According to the DWD website, the notice was received May 29, and the number of workers and dates of potential layoffs are unknown. The DWD noted it emailed the trustee for Sparhawk requesting more details.
