Republicans control the Wisconsin statehouse. By how many seats?

In Wisconsin, Republicans control the state Legislature, but Democrats hold some key statewide offices, including governor.

But in November, that all could change.

Republicans currently hold majorities in both the state Assembly and Senate, but Gov. Tony Evers, a Democrat, has been in office since 2019. But Evers isn’t seeking a third term, and some key races this fall will decide control of the state Legislature.

In 2026, Wisconsin will hold primary elections Aug. 11, then have its general election Nov. 3. Here’s a breakdown of how both houses of the state Legislature look as this year’s elections get closer.

What party controls the the Wisconsin State Assembly? 

In the Assembly, Republicans currently have a 54-45 seat majority, which means Democrats would need to gain five seats to take control.

There are seven upcoming races where Democrats aren’t running a candidate.

And one has two Republicans facing each other in a primary:

One race involves a Democrat running against another Democrat:

What party holds the majority in the Wisconsin State Senate?  

Republicans have less of a majority in the state Senate, holding an 18-15 advantage over Democrats. That mean Democrats would only have to net two seats to take control. Only 17 seats are up for election this year, with senators serving staggered four-year terms in Wisconsin.

Of those 17 seats, Republicans currently hold 12. Democrats have a candidate in every race except for one, which has a Republican is running against an independent candidate.
