Memorial Day weekend is approaching, and that means it’s time to stock up on brats for your cookout.
The Journal Sentinel wanted to know: in a city with as proud a bratwurst history as Milwaukee, which area grocer makes the best brats? Earlier this week, we asked readers to weigh in.
Now, we’re releasing the results of our informal poll. Out of more than 100 votes, here’s who came out on top.
Bunzel’s Meat Market voted best brats in Milwaukee area
Bunzel’s Meat Market and Catering, the specialty butcher shop and market at 9015 W. Burleigh St. in Milwaukee, took first place with 30% of the vote.
Bunzel’s offers pork and beef bratwurst made from an original recipe that seeks to evoke Old Country flavors, according to the shop’s website. For those looking for more unique experiences, there are honey mustard or jalapeño cheddar brats.
The store also offers a variety of pork, chicken and lamb sausages. Customers can order monthly meat deals online or shop in-store.
Bay View’s Groppi’s market places second
G. Groppi Food Market came in second place with 14% of the vote. The Bay View grocery store at 1441 E. Russell Ave. sells fresh bratwurst and sausages in multiple unique flavors.
Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly draws strong support
Strong write-in support propelled Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly to third place, with just over 10% of the vote. The employee-owned chain operates 10 stores in southeast Wisconsin and makes bratwurst daily at its location in Hartland.
Fox Bros. Piggly Wiggly’s brats and sausages have won multiple awards, including Grand Champion at the annual Wisconsin Association of Meat Processors convention.
Ray’s Butcher Shoppe, Usinger’s and Karl’s Country Market in Menomonee Falls also received multiple write-in votes.
