The New York Jets aren’t winning championships in May, but they are winning something else: Respect.
Another major outlet believes general manager Darren Mougey’s roster overhaul deserves serious praise.
CBS Sports became the latest major outlet to praise New York’s offseason work, handing the franchise an “A” grade for the roster overhaul Mougey & Co. have orchestrated. At some point, when respected national voices continue arriving at similar conclusions, the conversation shifts from offseason fluff to something more substantive. That appears to be what’s happening with this version of the Jets.
The most interesting part of CBS Sports’ breakdown isn’t necessarily the grade itself. It’s the fact that the praise continues arriving despite one glaring unresolved issue. The Jets still do not appear to have their long-term answer at quarterback, yet analysts continue viewing the organization’s direction favorably. That speaks volumes about how this roster is currently being perceived.
Mougey has clearly chosen not to patch old problems with temporary fixes. Instead, he appears to be reshaping the franchise around a more sustainable blueprint. That has meant moving on from recognizable names and former pillars of the previous regime while aggressively replenishing the roster with younger talent and carefully selected veterans. That strategy requires confidence, especially in a market like New York.
CBS Sports specifically highlighted the Jets’ work in the draft, where New York landed edge David Bailey with the second overall pick before adding tight end Kenyon Sadiq and wideout Omar Cooper Jr. later in the first round. Combined with receiver Garrett Wilson, running back Breece Hall, and offensive linemen Olu Fashanu, and Armand Membou, that creates an intriguing young offensive nucleus. Quarterback Geno Smith may not represent the future, but he provides stability while the organization continues searching for a long-term solution.
Defensively, additions like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Demario Davis, and T’Vondre Sweat help raise the floor immediately, while Bailey brings the type of blue-chip upside that franchises build around.
Jets fans have heard optimistic offseason narratives before, so skepticism remains understandable. This version feels a little different, however, because the praise isn’t centered around splashy headlines alone. For once, the Jets are being recognized for what appears to be a coherent long-term vision, and that may be the most encouraging development of all.
