It’s not every day that a celebrity walks into the place where you work, but for Old Guard Games general manager Josh Lowerre, that’s exactly what happened.
The store, 3132 N. Downer Ave., Milwaukee, – near the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus – posted on its Facebook page June 26 “You never know who you’ll see hanging out at Old Guard Games. Thanks to Post Malone for stopping by!” The store says it “is Milwaukee’s premier destination for miniatures, hobby supplies and tabletop gaming.”
Lowerre said the famous rapper called the store and one of his employees answered and didn’t recognize his voice. He said Malone asked whether the store had a Magic: The Gathering card product in stock and said he’d be at the store “in a minute.” Magic: The Gathering is a collectible trading card game.
“Next thing I know, he came to my side to say hi, and I looked up and then was just like ‘hi.’ Like it took a second, but, yeah, I knew it was him right away,” Lowerre said in a June 27 phone interview.
Lowerre said Malone spent between 20 and 40 minutes in the store and bought some accessories like deck boxes to store his cards in, specifically new collector boxes from the Marvel Super Heroes Magic: The Gathering set. He said Malone is well known in the Magic community. In 2023, Malone purchased a Lord of the Rings Magic: The Gathering “The One Ring” Card for $2 million, according to Forbes.com.
“He’s a really, really cool guy, though, like one of the nicest guys. It’s refreshing to see somebody get that popular, that has that much money and still be that down to earth,” Lowerre said.
Meeting with Malone didn’t hit him until after Malone left the store and Lowerre saw three Cadillac Escalades outside.
“I was pretty proud of all of my employees. Like we all kept it very cool. Just treated him like a normal customer, minus the fact that we knew it was Post (Malone),” Lowerre said.
Lowerre said Post Malone signed two Magic: The Gathering Cards for two of his employees, and Lowerre got a photo with the rapper.
Post Malone is the headliner at Summerfest Saturday, June 27, at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, with special guest Carter Faith. The show begins at 7 p.m. For ticket info, visit www.summerfest.com/ticket-info/.
