Texas A&M is in an interesting position: the roster is loaded with talent headed to the MLB, yet the program still has a strong foundation for the future with several key freshmen and sophomores. However, the transfer portal remains a real threat, and no team is immune to being raided.
Fortunately for the Aggies, NIL is a major advantage. They can go dollar‑for‑dollar with any program in the country. While that may sound like an arms race, it’s simply the current reality. NIL has also helped A&M land elite portal additions like Braden Montgomery and Chris Hacopian, two players who played major roles in the Aggies’ recent success.
The other major challenge is the timing of the MLB Draft, which disrupts rosters almost as much as the portal. Not only do you lose your top junior players, but you can also lose multiple high‑school signees before they ever step on campus.
That means you have to be extra diligent in the portal and double down on certain positions just to ensure you can field a competitive roster throughout the season. For A&M, pitching is the absolute highest priority moving forward. They need proven arms looking for a one‑and‑done season against SEC competition. Coach Earley will have to be a strong salesman because, over the past two years, pitching coach Jason Kelly has limited development, with many pitchers posting worse numbers year over year.
Unless there’s a change at pitching coach, mound time, and NIL may be the only way to attract top‑tier arms from the portal.
