MPSD to lease UWGB space for alternative education for $100K per year

MANITOWOC – Students attending alternative school programs through the Manitowoc Public School District will soon be attending classes at the UW-Green Bay Manitowoc Campus.

As part of the Manitowoc Public School District’s reconfiguration plan, the district needed a new space to house alternative school programs, the same programs that used to be part of McKinley Academy.

The MPSD school board finalized a three-year agreement with University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and Manitowoc County to lease space in Hillside Hall at the Manitowoc Campus for $100,000 per year.

The alternative programs had most recently been operating as Stangel Learning Community inside the former Stangel Elementary School, 1002 E. Cedar Ave. That building will again become an elementary school starting in fall 2026 as part of the district’s reconfiguration plan.

MPSD reconfiguration includes closing two schools

After the academic year ends in June, Madison and Jackson Elementary schools will be closed for good and those students will be assigned to different schools within the district.

The plan will help the district save about $2 million annually from staffing and operating costs. It will also bring several significant changes beginning in the 2026‑27 school year and aims to strengthen the district’s financial stability and adjust to long‑term enrollment declines.
